Congressman Calls Residents with Changed Zip Code Descriptions "Victims" - New Cities Blamed

Since the very beginning of our efforts to "Save Tucker!," members of this group have spoken to elected officials, city advocates, at public meetings and in various forms of social media about the need to protect our Tucker zip code before anything else.  For at least the past 40 or more years, Tucker, at the very least, has been identified by its own unique zip code, 30084.  The zip code 30085 is also called "Tucker" but contains only the P.O. Boxes at our Tucker Post Office.  The 30084 zip code has identified and unified the community because whenever anyone signed a lease or mortgage for property, they knew they were buying something that's located in Tucker.   This is the shape of the Tucker zip code and its original CDP (which were one and the same):   In fact, it was the zip code that was the first known "Census Designated Place" boundary set for Tucker in 2000.  Then, in 2010, that boundary changed a little based on shifts in where the...

Proposed Cities Have Not Disclosed Real Costs, Attorney Says

This letter was posted on the Decaturish site, under the title " Just Say No to New Cities ."  It is true for both the city of Lavista Hills as well as the city of Tucker.  Dear Decaturish, It is my understanding that the LaVista Hills movement is upset with the AJC article that the proposed revenue will be less than anticipated . I am more concerned about other misrepresentations to the community by the pro-city movement. The pro-LaVista Hi lls group in public meetings contends that court functions will remain in DeKalb County despite the fact that they are going to duplicate services. Regardless of what you call it, leaders  in the city effort have been less than  transparent about the cost of  services and where they plan  to get the funds. LaVista Hills residents will have to support the County Court system whether there is a new city or not. However, LaVista Hills will also unnecessarily duplicate services for mun...

DeKalb County School Board Member's Emails Show Support for Annexation

Here are just a few highlights of this investigative piece that was reported by Jeff Chirico, CBS Atlanta. Marshall Orson, a seated board member in DeKalb County, has to answer to some angry parents about his emails with supporters for "Together in Atlanta," a group pushing for annexation into the city of Atlanta. The annexation would take a DeKalb icon, the Druid Hills High School, and at least two elementary schools into the city limits of Atlanta, while still the residents would still technically reside in DeKalb County.  The Fernbank Science Center and Museum, Callenwalde Fine Arts Center and other parts of DeKalb County would also become new residents of "Atlanta in DeKalb."   State Rep. Karla Drenner (D - Avondale Estates) says she is shocked to learn that a school board member would seemingly favor something that could 'decimate' the school system. Annexation opponent Dawn Forman said Orson, as an elected board member, should be opposed t...

RULES Hearing at 4 p.m. Today!

Just received word that the Rules Committee will be next in line to hear about the Tucker and Lavista Hills bills today.  Keep in touch with any updates by posting on our Facebook site ! If the bills  pass Rules, they go in front of the full House of Representatives for a vote.  You can start right now  trying to reach all of them.  The Dekalb delegation doesn't have any more or less power than anyone else on that floor at the time of the vote.  Every Representative will have a chance to vote.  So, it is important they understand this isn't an ordinary bill about ordinary things. This decision can very easily come back to haunt them if they don't pay attention and the  next battleground is in their own district.  Chaos ....  that's all these bills are going to create ... chaos!  Here is a recent email we sent to the House of Representatives Committee on this issue: Dear Representatives,   Will one of you  P...

Proposed New Cities in DeKalb - Swimming in Lies, Fees and Red Tape

Common sense tells us that when you add more government to anything, you will end up with something that costs more, takes longer and could quite possibly be ineffective at solving the problem it set out to fix in the first place.  Agreed? Yet... advocates for new cities in DeKalb have claimed NOT ONLY that they would offer businesses a much needed improvement to their current permitting and zoning process, but also that this would be a primary driver of ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT for their little slice of the county.    FURTHERMORE, right after the last legislative session ended,  City of Tucker advocates were even claiming that THIS was a reason all by itself for us to be behind the efforts to incorporate. Are the residents of Tucker getting enough of a warning about what could happen if they get a city that can't support itself and fail?   Save Tucker! tried to  point out the simple fact that this desire to speed up the process might not be so great...

Can Anyone Explain THIS??

Wonder if these homes, found on Zillow.com, were factored into "The Lakeside Plan." Would you pay that much for a home that is apparently on the easement of someone else's front yard? They have full descriptions.  They just are not physically there. Looking to move to a certain school attendance zone so you can get the best education possible in DeKalb County, the worst large metropolitan county for education in one of the lowest ranked states for education in the country?  If you answered yes, then you are exactly the kind of person who needs one of these beauties: How about  19 44 Sil vastone Dr # 0,  Decatur, GA 30033,  4 beds  2.5 baths -- sqft FACTS   Single Family Built in 1960 Of course we don't know how this home existed on this street in 1960 when all the others around it were built in 1966 or later.   Maybe this WAS the one room school room where the kiddos used to go?  Either way, it is a steal a...
